Biggest turn-offs for new dates in our homes

With winter creeping ever closer, it can only mean one thing; cuffing season is back. As the nation waves goodbye to the summer, singletons across the country are looking to retire their dancing shoes and find someone to snuggle on the sofa with over the colder months; but TaskRabbit has revealed that the chances of finding someone are hugely reduced by a messy home.

The two-way network, which connects Taskers with those needing help with household jobs, found that unpleasant smells, leftover mouldy food, and a blocked toilet are the biggest turn-offs for any potential partners. Indeed, over half (56%) of Brits admit they’d be put off exploring a new relationship with a date simply because of the lack of cleanliness in their home.

The research revealed the top ten messy household turn offs are:

  • Bad smells (39%)
  • Old/mouldy food left around the house (36%)
  • Blocked toilet (36%)
  • Stained bedsheets (30%)
  • Dirty bathroom (27%)
  • Overflowing bin or rubbish left out (20%)
  • Smelly/dirty towels (18%)
  • Dirty surfaces (17%)
  • Dirty dishes and mugs left around the house (14%)
  • No bedsheets (11%)

Over one in five (21%) have actually declined another date with a potential new partner after seeing the state of their home. Indeed, one unlucky Brit recalled entering a date’s home to find the place crawling with insects due to the dirty surroundings, whilst another was appalled by the presence of animal droppings on the carpet.

For many, the state of our homes is never far from our minds when on a date, with a quarter of us (24%) admitting to not inviting a partner home due to embarrassment and fear of judgement as a result of mess. In fact, 15% of us have warned potential suitors that our house is untidy before returning home.
