Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson held a conference call on Wednesday and touched on a number of topics.
Here are the biggest takeaways.
Adjusting to “an unconventional offseason”
Robinson started off the conference call by thanking those on the front lines that are helping in the battle against the coronavirus outbreak.
He also explained how the team is adjusting to the restrictions in place in order to continue working through free agency and preparing for the 2020 NFL Draft.
Robinson also noted that the league is still working through how exactly the draft will be run.
As far as Robinson knows, nobody within the Titans organization has been infected with the coronavirus.
On the Jurrell Casey trade
Easily the biggest surprise move the Titans made this offseason was the Jurrell Casey trade. He was dealt to the Denver Broncos for a seventh-round pick in what was an obvious salary dump.
Robinson said it was time to go in a different direction.
The Titans still haven’t made a move to replace Casey, but there is still time to do so. Robinson hinted the Titans weren’t done in free agency, and that contract extensions for upcoming free agents are possible.
On Derrick Henry contract
Robinson made it clear the Titans wanted to sign Derrick Henry to a long-term deal, but were simply unable to get it done, which led to the franchise tag. He also left it open that a deal could still get done before camp.
Tennessee has until July 15 to get a long-term deal done, or else Henry will play the season out on the franchise tag. In that instance, he’d make $10.2 million in 2020.
Henry has the non-exclusive franchise tag, which means he can still negotiate with teams but the Titans have the right to match any offer. Any team that signs him would have to surrender two first-round picks.
Titans have spoken to Jadeveon Clowney and Logan Ryan
Until now, there have only been rumors that the Titans have spoken to Jadeveon Clowney, the biggest fish on the free-agent market right now.
Well, Robinson confirmed that the team has spoken to him, as well as Logan Ryan.
Robinson also confirmed the team’s most recent re-signing of outside linebacker Kamalei Correa and the signing of defensive lineman Jack Crawford.
On Vic Beasley and OLB group
Robinson praised Vic Beasley’s skill set and believes that head coach Mike Vrabel can help get the most out of him in 2020.
Overall, Robinson is very happy with the group he has at outside linebacker because of its youth, speed and athleticism.
Robinson also didn’t rule out adding even more options to the position despite how happy he is with the group as it stands.
On backups and competitions
Quarterback
Robinson says the Logan Woodside will have a chance to compete for the backup job, so it’s clear the Titans will bring in another quarterback at some point.
Kicker
While Robinson praised Greg Joseph, the team plans on giving him competition in camp.
Running back
One of the biggest areas of need for the Titans this offseason is the running back position behind Derrick Henry.
Robinson says Dalyn Dawkins will get his shot, but the team will look at other options in the draft and free agency, also.
