Mauricio Pochettino made changes at the break, including the withdrawal of Dier, but things took a turn for the worse when Juan Foyth was shown a straight red for a woeful challenge on Jack Simpson.
That left Tottenham playing the remainder of the game with just nine men and hands an opportunity to top-four rivals Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, all of whom play later this weekend.
