Biggar Rugby Club given top SRU accolade

Biggar Rugby Club president John Bogle said it was ‘mind-blowing’ to win the Scottish Rugby Club of the Year award at Murrayfield at the weekend.

The Hartree Mill club led Tennent’s National League 2 for the entire season, earning the top accolade.

Hamilton Rugby Club won last season’s award for achieving a similar feat.

Bogle added: “It's mind-blowing, seriously mind-blowing to win this award.

"I was sitting listening to the intro and I knew what our club had done this year, and I was proud of it, but when our name was announced I honestly didn’t believe it and I still don’t quite believe it.”

Biggar made a number of achievements last term, including their under-18 girls winning the National Shield, while Sarah Denholm, Emma Orr, Kaylee Fraser, Feebi Robinson and Rachel Phillips were selected to represent Scotland at age group level.

Their under-16 boys won the West District Shield, three from four mini age groups earned Spirit of Rugby awards at the Boroughmuir festival, and Biggar Bairns, an initiative to provide basic, fundamental skills to pre-school aged children was launched with great results.

In the Futures squad, Calum Smith was picked for the Scotland Under-16s and Andrew Nimmo for the u20s.

John Bogle added: "This latest award is the absolute icing on the cake and is a tribute to all those volunteers, who so willingly give of their time to provide coaching, first-aid, cleaning, painting, building, repairing, and so on.

"Also included are the club's loyal sponsors and advertisers, not forgetting the many supporters and club members who turn out week in, week out to cheer the teams on, or the mums and dads who drive countless miles to bring their youngsters to the club and to away games."

Biggar’s AGM is on Wednesday, June 19, at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
