Big Yellow reports high demand for self-storage space

Self-storage firm Big Yellow has seen a surge in people urgently seeking storage space as they try to make room in their homes for work.

The warehousing company, which has more than 40 sites within the M25, said it had seen increased demand from domestic customers and students over the past week.

However, Big Yellow said that although it has seen new business customers move in, there have been a number that have moved out. The firm said it has agreed a rent holiday or a deferral on a case by case basis for some customers, principally businesses.

Big Yellow also said today it has also stopped staff from using public transport to get to work.

The FTSE 250 property company said that while most employees drive, cycle or walk in, moving those who don’t off public transport is for their safety and to “help reduce pressure on the system”.

The firm will pay for alternative transport modes for the small minority impacted.

There have been concerns in London about the number of people across various sectors still using the tube despite coronavirus fears.
