Australia will have a men's team in the Olympic beach volleyball competition for the first time in 13 years after securing the final quote spot for the Tokyo Games at a qualifying event in Thailand.
The teams of Chris McHugh/Damien Schumann and Max Guehrer/Zach Schubert both claimed 2-0 wins over Indonesian opponents at the AVC Continental Cup on Sunday.
One of those pairings will be selected in the next week to compete in Tokyo.
"It's been a long time since Australia had a men's team compete at the Olympics, 2008 Beijing, and I couldn't be prouder of the boys," said McHugh, who won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
"It has been a tough two weeks in Thailand, essentially playing while in a quarantine bubble.
"We've either been in quarantine or outside playing volleyball for an hour and a half, no gym, no stretching outside.
"But that's what we had to do in this COVID world and credit to Thailand Volleyball and the government for ensuring the competition could go ahead."
Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar have already been named as Australia's team in the women's beach volleyball competition in Tokyo.
The Australian men will depart Thailand for Brisbane on Monday to undergo a two-week quarantine period.
The successful pair will then have only five days of training before heading to Tokyo.
