SONGKHLA: An Omura's whale weighing between 800 and 1,000 kilogrammes was found dead ashore.

Residents at Moo 3 in Ra Not district found the whale on their village beach and alerted the Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Centre in the lower Gulf of Thailand.

Centre director Suthep Juealaong said the 6m-long whale was about one year old and might have died when tropical storm Pabuk unleashed strong winds and turbulent waves on its path to the gulf early this month.

The carcass was taken to the centre in Muang district for officials to determine the cause of the death.

It was the second dead whale found in the province in two days. The same species was also found dead on Samila beach in Muang district on Wednesday.
