In the fourteenth of a series of articles on the Big Venture Challenge Winners, we introduce Shaun Doran founder of Bulky Bob's.
Big Venture Challenge is a national programme, run by UnLtd and supported by the Big Lottery Fund, to find 25 of the most ambitious social entrepreneurs in England. The 25 winners all want investment so that their enterprises can deliver social impact on a significant scale. They will each receive a unique package of financial and non-financial support to help them achieve their goals. Meet winner No 14:
Shaun Doran founder of Bulky Bob's
Who are they?
Shaun Doran joined FRC Group – Bulky Bob's parent charity - in 1999 and was central to the startup and ongoing success of Bulky Bob's. Before FRC, Shaun's career was in the timber industry, managing timber companies in the UK and internationally. Shaun is supported by an exceptional management team with wide and varied skills and experience.
What do they do?
The commercial heart of Bulky Bob's is a bulky waste collection, reuse and recycling service. The business operates local authority contracts, collecting items from households, and maximises reuse/recycling to prevent good quality items being landfilled. They also operate prison refurbishment workshops in which prisoners undertake meaningful employment and training. Finally, Bulky Bob's Furniture World sells great quality 'pre-loved' furniture and appliances in the high street at affordable prices.
Why were they selected?
The judges and UnLtd were impressed by the strong track record of environmental and social impact, and the clarity of the business model. They felt that, with the support of the Big Venture Challenge, there is significant potential to grow and expand the model across the country.
