‘Big ugly betrayal’: Chuck Schumer rips into Trump’s habit of overpromising and underdelivering

United States Senator Chuck Schumer has never been one to mince his words when it comes to criticising Donald Trump and his administration. Since the megalomaniac’s ascension to power for a second term as President of the United States in 2025, Schumer has repeatedly spoken out, with the current Trump and Republican induced government shutdown being no exception.

On October 1, Chuck Schumer took to his X account to upload a video of him speaking about the Republican and Donald Trump-induced government shutdown. Highlighting that the Republicans “wouldn’t protect Americans’ health care”, Schumer assured that he and his party will continue to fight for the “American people.”

On the same day, he clarified some of the comments made by Trump and his blind Republican devotees, remarking that the healthcare provisions the Democrats were fighting for did not aid “undocumented people” as Trump claimed. He noted that the immigrant narrative being woven by the president and his party were a lie “to divert attention from their shutdown”. He also insisted that people not be mistaken, as he noted that the Republicans were refusing to lower healthcare costs for the “American people.”

Throughout the shutdown period, Chuck Schumer’s digs at President Donald Trump continued as he took one wrong step after another. On October 8, he uploaded a video on X where he tore Trump apart over his previous comments about his “big beautiful bill” (one that probably doesn’t exist and if it does, will be far from beautiful). Calling it the “big ugly betrayal”, Schumer highlights that Trump’s propositions for the bill would affect the healthcare of approximately 16 million American people. He notes that it will cut $16 trillion from health care and cause the ACA credits to expire. Additionally, it will increase insurance premiums by 93 per cent, which will lead to 22 million people paying more, and 4 million losing coverage completely. The video also comprised personal testimonies from healthcare professionals who elaborated on the consequences of Trump’s propositions for the bill.
