Big twist in Antonio Rudiger's Chelsea future after defender makes surprise decision

One of the big Chelsea exits during this transfer window is set to be Antonio Rudiger.

However, it is now looking unlikely that the Germany international will be heading out of Stamford Bridge this summer.

Having not been part of Frank Lampard's squad this season, the 27-year-old was keen to make a move from the Blues, with a loan looking more likely.

But there haven't been a big amount of interest and now Rudiger could fight for his spot at the Blues.

Chelsea were willing to facilitate the move for Rudiger, with the defender having slipped down to the fifth-choice centre-back.

One of the interested clubs to take Rudiger on was Tottenham Hotspur, however a deal between clubs is becoming unlikely to happen.

Rudiger was keen on the switch, however Chelsea are not likely to strengthen a direct opponent with a loan deal for the 2020/21 campaign.

The German has not been Spurs's first choice over the window, with Martin Skriniar being the north London side's top option.

Chelsea would prefer to send Rudiger on loan to a club away from the Premier League, and it had looked like Roma were the favourites.

Rudiger left the Serie A club in 2017 to join Chelsea, but a return to the club is now looking less likely before the window shuts.

Roma were looking at a loan deal for the defender, while the Blues would like him to sign a new one-year contract before he departs, with his current deal set to end in 2022.

Reports from France suggest that PSG, who were linked with Rudiger, are not going to be bringing in any more players this summer.

And it means that Rudiger is looking more likely to stay with Chelsea and fight for his place in the side.
