Big takeaways from the Steelers choice of CB Joey Porter Jr.

The Pittsburgh Steelers never panicked. There was no need. The Steelers sat back and waited for that No. 32 overall pick and landed their guy in cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Here are our big takeaways from the pick.

Getting Porter at 32 is a different matter

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

If the Steelers had used their first-round pick on Porter, this is a different conversation. But the fact the team was able to get Broderick Jones in the first and still land Porter in the second makes this a much better bargain for the Steelers.

Porter is a pure outside cornerback but his addition does give the Steelers some flexibility in the slot. This is because current starter Levi Wallace can play inside so when the Steelers want better coverage in the slot, Wallace replaces Arthur Maulet and Porter takes his spot.

Impact on Patrick Peterson

Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

Head coach Mike Tomlin hinted that Patrick Peterson could see some time at safety and the addition of Porter helps facilitate that.
