Big Six 'want Rangers and Celtic to join British Super League' with end of season play-offs

Celtic and Rangers could be part of a British Super League amid calls for a Premier League reform.

The English top flight's big six attempted to join a breakaway European Super League before they backed out of proposals following heavy criticism and fan backlash.

Despite that they remain committed to reshaping the structure of English football which could include new members.

One reform idea would see Celtic and Rangers head south of the border in a move that is likely to be backed by UEFA, FIFA and the Government, reports the Sun.

The Old Firm clubs would be keen on the idea as their inclusion would likely see a spike in interest from fans across the world, sponsors and broadcasters.

Their SPL rivals are also keen on the idea as it would end their domestic dominance and give them a chance to qualify for Europe.

One club source said: “Whether or not the Super League was going to happen, we all feel that the Premier League has to be changed and improved.

“It is time we opened it up to Rangers and Celtic. That would make sense for everyone.”

Premier League chief executive has been forced to agree to a “strategic review” of the competition’s future.

There have also been suggestions that a play-off system could be introduced, as is used in rugby union, with the top four battling it out at the end of the season.

In their desire for reform Manchester United and Liverpool both failed in plans last year to get their Project Big Picture idea off the ground, but they believe they can negotiate a change to the competition's format.

They remain adamant that a reduction of teams, from 20 to 18, is also a necessity.

Another club chief added: “We have never wavered from the belief that 18 clubs is the only sensible way forward.

“It is also what Uefa, Fifa and the European Club Association have long called for.”
