Big Sing Bonfire draws Hobart crowds despite drizzle

The Big Sing Bonfire takes place every year, as part of the Festival of Voices.

Hobart locals and visitors have come out in full voice as part of this year's Big Sing Bonfire.

Hundreds of people huddled around bonfires in the cold and drizzly weather for the annual event, which is part of the Festival of Voices.

Professional musicians, including Deke Sharon and the Modern Maori Quartet, performed first before the crowd was invited to join in for a singalong to the Pharrell Williams hit Happy.

Festival director, Peter Choraziak, said it was the community participation that made the event special.

"It is about everyone singing and feeling good," he said.

"No matter what the weather is, no matter how you're feeling, singing just feels so damn good."

Mr Choraziak said the event was in its 14th year and showed no signs of slowing down.

"It's a bit chilly tonight, there's lots of snow on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington but people are still here and still loving it."

Hobart local Lucinda Toynbee Wilson has attended the Big Sing Bonfire every year since it begun and said it was a "fabulous event".

"It brings so much of Hobart together in winter, which is absolutely beautiful," she said.

"It's about community, it's about participation and it's just fantastic."

Choir singer Ruben Burvenich was visiting Hobart from Belgium and described the Big Sing as "just the best, it's 100 per cent my thing".

"The fact that they're bringing a cappella music into the mainstream, like a festival just for voices is completely new to me," he said.

"We should have this in Europe, in Belgium preferably."

The Festival of Voices runs until July 15.
