Police step in over huge queues of traffic as McDonald's reopen Glasgow drive thrus

Glaswegians are queueing up in cars across the city following a last minute announcement that seven McDonald’s branches would reopen in the city today.

As reported on Glasgow Live, fast food restaurants are open for drive thru service only at Partick, Easterhouse, Finnieston, Maryhill, Pollokshaws, Robroyston and Springburn - and it looks like many of you have been missing your Maccy Ds enough to brave a lengthy wait in a hot car.

Police are in attendance at Crow Road retail park as well as McDonald’s staff pointing cars through a traffic cone system, and at several branches, officers appear to be directing traffic to deal with the massive jams.

Video footage (above) from the Partick branch shows vehicles snaked around the car park and out onto Crow Road, and McDonald's restaurants across the city are reportedly wracking up hour-long queues.

The queue for McDonald's Finnieston stretches round to Argyle Street, towards Anderston (Amanda Bates)

Glasgow Live readers have shared photos from the Finnieston and Springburn branches which show similar traffic jams, and Glaswegians have taken to Twitter to complain about the chaos caused by McDonald's reopening for the first time since lockdown.

A reduced menu is in place for now, so you won’t be able to pick up all your favourites from the drive thru restaurants listed above - but we think it’s safe to assume that the Big Mac and fries are on there.

A McDonald's spokesperson confirmed today: "Following a successful pilot, we can confirm 924 drive thru restaurants will reopen between June 2 and June 4. We will also add 75 restaurants to McDelivery via either UberEats or Just Eat.

"In order to allow for social distancing, we will have fewer employees in our kitchens and service areas.

"To help our smaller teams, we will be offering a limited menu (no breakfast, wraps or shakes), over reduced hours (11am - 10pm).

"We continue to ask that you limit your spend to £25 and use contactless payment methods wherever possible.

"Our teams are adjusting to new safety and hygiene procedures, which will help them to work safely and social distance; we appreciate your continued patience.”
