“Big opportunity” - Arsenal fans make the same point as Cedric Soares starts against Chelsea

Arsenal fans were in agreement that Cedric was the right choice to start for the Gunners against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The former Southampton defender was handed his first outing of the season at the Emirates Stadium against the reigning European champions, with continued uncertainty over the position.

Fellow right-back Hector Bellerin appears likely to depart the club this summer, with talks ongoing over his immediate future in north London.

Meanwhile, Calum Chambers struggled last time out in the Gunners’ 2-0 reverse at the hands of Brentford on the opening weekend of the season.

As a result, Mikel Arteta made the brave decision to hand Cedric a start during the Gunners’ first home game of the campaign against Chelsea, a decision that some Arsenal fans certainly saw sense with.

Here is the best of their responses from social media.

Cedric’s appearance against the Blues was his 30th outing in all competitions for the north London outfit since he initially joined on-loan from Southampton, before the deal was eventually made permanent.

He will certainly hope to put down a marker to Arsenal boss Arteta, with a tough assignment ahead of him at the Emirates Stadium.

Nevertheless, with the right-back berth up for grabs for the remainder of the campaign, a positive performance up against Thomas Tuchel’s men may possibly stand the right-back in good stead for the remainder of the campaign, should Bellerin indeed depart the club in the final week of the transfer window.

Cedric still has three years remaining on his current contract in north London, whilst Bellerin has been linked with the likes of Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.
