Big Little Lies Season 3 in early stages of development

Big Little Lies season 3 update: producers and actors working on development.

Big Little Lies season 3 has received an exciting new update from HBO and Max's content chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys. After the season 2 finale in 2019, fans were left wondering if the hit series would continue, until recently when producers and actresses Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon shared that they are actively working on developing season 3. While the first season was adapted from the Big Little Lies novel by Liane Moriarty, season 2 delved further into the story beyond the original source material, and season 3 will follow suit.

In a discussion with Variety, Casey Bloys revealed that he's been informed 'a little about the idea' for season 3 and believes it has the potential to be great. Kidman and Witherspoon are consulting with Moriarty to add depth to the existing storylines and characters from the previous seasons. Bloys expects that showrunner David E. Kelley will be returning as well, although it is still early in the development process.

However, there are hurdles to overcome before season 3 can be brought to life. As Bloys pointed out, coordinating the schedules of the star-studded cast is a logistical challenge, and the script still needs to be written. While it is still at an early stage, Bloys expressed confidence in the special bond shared by the cast and their commitment to make it happen. Whenever they are ready, HBO will be excited and ready to take the next steps.

Big Little Lies season 2 seamlessly continued from the first season, as the Monterey Five faced the aftermath of Perry Wright's death and the subsequent consequences. The second season's conclusion, where the Monterey Five seemingly turned themselves in to the police, was a powerful and poignant way to wrap up their character arcs and confront the consequences of their actions. This ending left some fans questioning the need for a season 3, as it felt like a natural conclusion to the story.

Bloys' comments suggest that season 3 is primarily driven by the desire of the cast and crew to work together once again, rather than having a specific continuation in mind. While seeing Kidman, Witherspoon, Dern, Woodley, Kravitz, and the rest of the talented cast reunited is certainly enticing, the foundation of a compelling story is crucial. Unlike the first season that benefited from Moriarty's novel, and the second season that drew inspiration from an unpublished novella by the author, creating season 3 without source material poses a risk to the show's storytelling.

It's worth considering that Liane Moriarty, the author of the original novel, is also known for her book Nine Perfect Strangers, which was later adapted into a Hulu series starring Nicole Kidman, further showcasing the successful collaboration between Moriarty and Kidman.

While the first season of Big Little Lies was met with critical acclaim, the reception to the second season was more mixed, with some feeling that the story didn't live up to its earlier brilliance. Season 3 faces a similar challenge, especially without a clear source material to build upon. However, there are potential avenues to explore, such as delving into the Monterey Five's time in jail or following the younger generation of characters, as suggested by Woodley.

Ultimately, the decision to proceed with Big Little Lies season 3 rests on finding a compelling and meaningful way to continue the story. While the series may not necessarily need a third season, the passion and talent of the cast and crew may surprise us once again and make it a worthy addition to the Big Little Lies legacy. Until then, fans eagerly await more updates on the development of season 3.
