Big Little Lies season 2 episode 5 preview: Celeste goes to war with Mary Louise

"We have to do what is best for the children."

Mary Louise Wright ( Meryl Streep ) continues to ruffle feathers in Monterey in season 2 of Big Little Lies, and has now launched a legal battle against daughter-in-law Celeste ( Nicole Kidman ) for custody of her twin sons Max and Josh.

As if that wasn't enough, Madeline ( Reese Witherspoon ) struggled to win Ed ( Adam Scott ) back, Bonnie's ( Zoe Kravitz ) mother Elizabeth (Crystal Fox) had a stroke, Renata ( Laura Dern ) faced humiliation, and Jane ( Shailene Woodley ) opened up to new beau Corey (Douglas Smith).

Next week's episode, entitled Kill Me , promises even more drama for the Monterey Five.

Has their secret been blown?

Big Little Lies season 2 episode 5: Five things to expect from "Kill Me"

1. Celeste fights Mary Louise for her children

After another Ambien and booze-filled evening ended in Mary Louise and the kids interrupting her one-night stand, Celeste found herself confronted with legal papers as her mother-in-law is seeking to take Max and Josh away from struggling Celeste. Faced with a custody battle and Mary Louise preventing few local skilled attorneys from helping her, the widowed Celeste has an uphill struggle ahead.

2. Renata rallies to Celeste's cause

One person who will be helping her abused friend Celeste is the "Medusa of Monterey" that is Renata Klein. Despite having to deal with husband Gordon's own legal troubles, Renata focuses her efforts on helping Celeste get the aid she needs in stopping Mary Louise and her skilled attorney (Denis O'Hare) from getting the twins for good.

3. Ziggy fears his heritage

The trailer for next episode shows Ziggy Chapman confessing mum Jane that he is worried he will end up like his abusive father Perry Wright. The worries come after Jane explained how Ziggy was conceived, meaning will she live to regret being so honest with her young son?

4. Ed struggles to forgive Madeline

Since the revelation of her infidelity, Madeline has remained in a limbo situation with husband Ed, as he refuses to forgive her but also won't leave her. Showing disdain and now intimacy towards his wife, is Ed going to be able to move ahead with his marriage? The trailer suggests he may look for comfort from someone else entirely.

5. Bonnie faces her past and fears her future

As Elizabeth recovers from her stroke - seemingly brought about by a vision of Bonnie drowning - Bonnie has to confront her mother's abuse to her when she was younger, but it seems that could be the least of her concerns as the Monterey Five question if their secret is about to be exposed.

Big Little Lies season 2 continues on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on July 8, 2019.
