Big Little Lies season 2 episode 1: Meryl Streep's 'creepy' scream terrifies viewers

The return of HBO show Big Little Lies featured a hair-raising moment involving new cast addition Meryl Streep.

Streep has joined the cast as Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) who was murdered in the season one finale. Filled with grief over the loss of her son, she moves in with Celeste (Nicole Kidman), which creates all kinds of tension considering she was present at the scene of the crime.

Fans are already predicting that Streep will be a likely contender for an Emmy award for her performance. Many are highlighting one particular scene that caught a lot of people off guard: while sat around the dinner table with Celeste and her grandchildren, Mary Louise asks them if they want to hear how she deals with her grief. The kids nod and, out of nowhere, she suddenly screams extremely loudly.

"My grief is too loud for you?" Mary Louise asks when Celeste urges her to stop.

Fas were quick to discuss the moment on Twitter with some comparing her "creepy" performance to Mrs Bates.

Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz all return for the second season of the hit drama.

Big Little Lies is based on the novel by Liane Moriarty. You can watch the trailer for season two above.

The series is available to watch in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV. You can read our review here.
