Well folks, it’s time to drape yourself in a rug and look forlornly out of a window, because the third season of Big Little Lies is now officially in development — with a rumoured plotline that already has me clutching a glass of vino.
While we’d heard rumblings that our favourite rich suburban mums were heading back to screens, Deadline recently confirmed the drama series has in fact been renewed for a third instalment, with a flurry of additional deets.
It’s reported that the upcoming season, which has yet to receive a release date, has tapped Francesca Sloane as both an executive producer and the writer of the first episode.

Sloane’s writing credits include Atlanta and Fargo, as well as Amazon’s perpetually in-development TV adaptation of Mr and Mrs Smith.
Big Little Lies’ third season will pull from Aussie author Liane Moriarty’s upcoming sequel to her original novel, which formed the basis of the Emmy-winning first season.
Very little details as to the plot have been revealed, but the first season detailed the ~ mysterious ~ murder of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry, while the second instalment covered the investigation, cover-up, and Meryl Streep howling like a wolf in the night.
Naturally, a whole bunch of lingering shots of the California coastline and multiple glasses of white wine were thrown in for extra measure.
While no casting news has been confirmed, it’s a sure bet that Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon will reprise their roles as Monterey mums to whom mystery is always afoot, since both stars have spoken about their enthusiasm to get the season three ball rolling.

Last year, Kidman said the new season was moving “fast and furious” (Vin Diesel cameo, mayhaps?), while Witherspoon said the upcoming batch of episodes will be “exciting because the kids are probably a little bit older now”.
Witherspoon’s comment adds to rumours that the third season will involve some kind of a time jump plotline, with Deadline reporting that Moriarty’s accompanying book, thought to hit shelves in 2026, follows the women as they are “now mums of teenagers”.
How that time jump plotline will play out remains to be seen, but since it’s been six years since the second season, I imagine the lil’ ones have well and truly graduated from kindergarten by now.
Alongside Streep, Kidman and Witherspoon, Big Little Lies has played host to a cast of bonafide mothers throughout its run, including Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley.
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see exactly what happens when season three eventually hits screens, but in the meantime, there’s a window that desperately needs to be looked out of, so I’m off. Glug glug glug.
