SEATTLE _ The Padres got up big on a couple errors, a couple home runs and a double.
The Mariners got close.
Then the Padres' bullpen did what it does, only mostly better than usual.
Trey Wingenter, Robert Stock, Jose Castillo and Craig Stammen struck out nine Mariners in a row to get from the start of the sixth through the eighth inning.
The strikeout streak was halted when Kyle Seager hit Kirby Yates' first pitch of the ninth inning over the wall in center field. Dee Gordon followed with a bloop single to center before Yates got the final three outs to preserve a 5-4 victory Wednesday at Safeco Field.
With the win, the Padres swept the four-game season series against the Mariners _ the first time in 21 seasons either team has swept the other _ and finished with a winning record (5-3) on their final long road trip of the season.
Austin Hedges hit a two-run homer in the second, and Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Eric Hosmer reached on an error before Hedges' blast, and Wil Myers reached on an error before Renfroe's.
Myers' double in the third inning, which scored Francisco Mejia from first base, accounted for the Padres' other run.
Padres starter Joey Lucchesi (8-8) allowed three runs, all in the fifth inning, before giving way to the bullpen.
Three rookies in a row went to work.
Wingenter struck out all three batters he faced in the sixth inning, Stock the only batter he faced in the seventh and Castillo the final two batters of the seventh and first one of the eighth.
Stammen, pitching in his third straight game (over four days), finished off the eighth.
Yates, also pitching in a third consecutive game, had not allowed a run in six appearances (5 2/3 innings). After Seager's blast and Gordon's single, Yates got a fielder's choice grounder from Denard Span and a fly ball to left field by Ben Gamel. With two strikes on Chris Herrmann, Span stole second before Yates completed the strikeout for his ninth save.
The Padres finished their eight-game, 10-day trek with splits in Arizona and Cincinnati and the sweep here.
All that remains is a six-game home stand against the Rangers and Giants, a six-game trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco and a season-ending three-game series against the Diamondbacks.
