Big hearted schoolgirl runs 100km to raise money for charity

A schoolgirl from West Lothian is running 100km for NHS charities.

Lucy Paris, from Mid Calder, is a first year pupil at James Young High School in Livingston and whilst stuck indoors during lockdown she decided to raise funds for the NHS.

The 12-year-old has family who are nurses and key workers and after being inspired by their hard work and dedication she wanted to do something to show her appreciation.

Her mum, Deborah, explained: “She got the idea abut three weeks ago when the lockdown was extended and when Captain Tom was in the news.

“Lucy wanted to do something to increase her own stamina and we got chatting about all the options and I said she should set herself a goal. It was then she came up with the idea to run 100km, at 5-6km per day.”

They set up a JustGiving page and settled on a target amount of £1000 and Lucy is already close to that amount but now she just wants to keep it going and see how much she can raise to help her family on the frontline.

Lucy goes out on her daily run with her brothers Rory and Zach, or her Mum, but Deborah says she struggles to keep up.

She continued: “We have family who work at St John’s as nurses and also have family living in Newcastle who work as nurses too. Her grandfather also works as a lorry driver on night-shift for Tesco Livingston. Lucy seen stuff in the press and on social media about them not having PPE and this is keeping her going.

“Her big brother, Zach, plays for Hearts and he goes out and spurs her on some days. I have went out with her too but only seem to slow her down!”

Deborah says she and her husband, Scott, are really proud of their daughter and would appreciate if anyone would donate to her page.
