Big-hearted Dumfries youngster walks 280,000 steps to help Children’s Hospices Across Scotland

A big-hearted youngster is hoping to provide support for the families of poorly children through her charity bid.

Maisy McGill launched her attempt to complete 280,000 steps in February as part of a fundraising drive for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland.

And she smashed her target in plenty of time.

Lincluden Primary pupil Maisy has pounded the pavements and taken to the treadmill – even completing 20,000 steps in one session – to smash the challenge.

The 10-year-old has also raised £210 for CHAS – which runs the Robin House Hospice in Balloch on Loch Lomondside and predecessor Rachel House in Kinross – as well as providing support at home for the families of seriously ill children.

Proud dad Paul praised his daughter’s efforts saying: “It has helped Maisy get a bit of exercise.

“We weren’t sure if she was going to be able to do it but she passed the target.

“She’s just one of those girls who likes to do stuff to help everybody else.

“She’s always thinking of other people.”

Ambulance worker Paul added: “We were in Australia last Christmas and New Year and Maisy was in tears wondering what she could do to help because of the wildfires.

“She was devastated about all the animals who were injured and everything.

“Her grandparents have some elderly neighbours and she wants to make them a three-course meal when lockdown finishes. That’s just how she is but we’re really proud of her.”

Mum Sam has also joined Maisy on weekend walks to Kilnford Farm from the family’s Lincluden home to help boost her steps total.

Anyone who wants to donate to Maisy’s total for CHAS can do so by logging on to her fundraising page at www.facebook.com/donate/786464898655104
