Big-hearted Dumfries residents selling rainbows to raise funds to buy gifts for key workers

Big-hearted Karen Kennedy found her own pot of gold at the end of a rainbow with a wealth of donations and gifts for key workers.

The 36-year-old foster carer started making rainbows and put them online before being swamped with interest and offers to buy the woollen gifts.

With the help of her sister Vanda Renwick, Karen started the rainbow project a few weeks ago but the response has been overwhelming and they now deliver treats to key workers from nurses to care home staff.

Karen, from Lincluden, said she feels like Santa at times when dropping off gifts to people at their door.

She said: “It’s been a bit like that. It’s brilliant,

“Basically it all started with me and my sister talking about the rainbow drawings people were putting in their windows and we were trying to think of something else to do to support key workers.

“So we started to crochet rainbows for maybe older people who didn’t have kids and who wanted to hang something in their window and the idea of crocheting some rainbows came about.

“I took a picture of one and put it on Facebook then loads of people were asking about where they could get them so Vanda and I started selling them and putting the money towards paying for treats for key workers.

“There were sweets then Easter eggs. Now it is bottles of wine and gift sets like toiletries. There’s lots of different things being handed to us and now we have got a list of nominations for people who deserve a treat and I go out and deliver with my friend Heather Connelly. It can cost a bit in petrol but it’s worth it.

“We have so many donations coming in it’s incredible. People are so kind and now Tesco have come in offering stuff as well.”

Karen now has a Santa-style gift list with people nominating key workers worthy of a treat.

She added: “We only started this a few weeks ago and it has just gone mental.

“Vanda and Heather do the crocheting and we all take part in the deliveries.

“I have four pages of names on A4 paper for nominations and there are still lots of donations coming in. Like I say, there are so many good people out there willing and wanting to help.

“When we go out on deliveries we just usually knock on the door then go back a bit and wait for them to be collected.”
