Big-hearted Alexandria schoolgirl raises funds for Christmas toybank appeal

A big-hearted Alexandria schoolgirl has handed West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare’s Toybank Appeal a Christmas boost after organising a festive fayre and photoshoot.

For 12-year-old Amy Don, a pupil at Vale of Leven Academy, giving to those in need has been a long held passion.

Her proud mum Lesley Conkie said: “When she was four she saw a wee girl on Lorraine Kelly who had lost all of her hair, and I think it was because of leukemia or another form of cancer, and straight away she said she would give her her hair.

“Straight away I was like no you’re not, but she was quite serious about it and said that it’s only her hair and that it’ll grow back, and who am I to say no to that?

“So she ended up raising £1500 for a cancer charity by doing that.”

Whilst it’s Amy’s photographic skills that are the main attraction much of the other organisation is a family affair.

Lesley continued: “Me and my sister Sharlane and do all the organising and then Amy turns up and has the talent to take the pictures.

“She had fallen in love with photography so we got her her own wee camera and she decided that she’d start organising photoshoots to raise some money for good causes.

“Last year she organised a photoshoot for a homeless charity in Glasgow called The Invisibles, but this year we wanted to do something a bit closer to home.”
