
Sickle-wielding farmers harvest giant Japanese butterbur at the start of peak season in Ashoro, Hokkaido. Reaching heights that dwarf a full-grown adult with stalks measuring up to 10 centimeters in diameter, the crop is a fixture on summer menus in the region, frequently fried up as tempura. The farmers expect to harvest 30,000 tons of butterbur from their fields by the end of June.
