'Big gulf' - Why Nottingham Forest's FA Cup humbling must have left Chris Hughton concerned

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton had better hope his players put up more of a fight in their relegation battle than they did in the FA Cup.

It was largely a walk in the park for Swansea City in the fourth round tie at the Liberty Stadium.

The Reds got what they deserved, being thumped 5-1 as a big gulf between the two clubs showed.

Yes, it wasn’t Forest’s first-team. Yes, some of the decisions from the officials were terrible. Yes, this was a much-changed side with some players who have seen very little game time - and one, in Loic Mbe Soh, who was out of position.

But there’s no getting away from what was a dreadfully poor performance by the visitors. They were undoubtedly second best.

Perhaps most concerning for the manager, there was a seeming lack of determination from a fair few in the Garibaldi - the majority of whom should have been busting a gut to show they deserved to keep their places in the side.

Not many of them will have given Hughton a selection headache for next Saturday’s return to league action.

That is the only comfort to take from a miserable afternoon - that it will be a very different XI which takes to the pitch against Barnsley.

Few who faced the Swans stuck their hand up to put themselves in contention for that one - aside from Anthony Knockaert.

The Fulham loanee looked to have handed the visitors a lifeline when he made it 2-1, before an awful penalty call handed their opponents the initiative again.

Still, aside from a short spell after the break when Forest did look a bit brighter, Knockaert was really the only one who tried to make things happen.

If he is involved next week, he will need to do the same again. As will new signing Filip Krovinovic.

The issues the Reds have with scoring goals haven’t gone away - they were especially flat in the first half. And they are still in a precarious position in the Championship table.

Forest did improve during their seven-match unbeaten run, and they really need to rediscover that momentum quickly.

These last two games, while pretty grim, are not necessarily the start of a downturn. This is a side which isn't at a level of consistency; they haven't reached that standard - they were always going to suffer from ups and downs, particularly when up against good teams like Swansea.

These last two outings, against the Swans and Middlesbrough, in the league, have shown where the Reds are, and that Hughton still has problems to address.
