Big developments in case that inspired Netflix's Making a Murderer

The case to free Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey has taken a turn after a new witness has come forward.

Local Wisconsin site Patch has reported that "a former Gannett Wisconsin newspaper delivery route driver has signed a sworn affidavit attesting that he notified the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office at the time of Teresa Halbach's disappearance that he saw Bobby Dassey and another man moving Halbach's RAV4 vehicle to the Avery property."

In November 2005, Steven Avery was arrested for the murder of Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach.

In 2007, Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The conviction was upheld by higher courts. Both men have consistently said they're innocent.

On Monday afternoon, Avery's lawyer Kathleen Zellner filed a motion in Manitowoc County that accused Avery's prosecutors of committing a Brady violation.

The report states that: "Prosecutors and police are not allowed to hide exculpatory evidence that may be favourable to a criminal defendant in preparation for trial."

Speaking about this latest development, Zellner said she believes that "this is an evidence bombshell in the Avery case. We consider it the most significant witness evidence ever in the case, and it's an objective, non-biased witness who notified police in 2005 and he was ignored.

"I think Steven Avery never would have been convicted had this evidence been known during his trial, and it destroys Bobby Dassey's credibility and links him to the crime."

Zellner believes that this development merits a new trial for Avery.

The pertinent details of the affidavit can be found here, as per Patch.
