Big deals for Canadian newspaper publishers

The Canadian newspaper industry remains more vibrant than in both the United States and Britain. There have been a wave of deals recently.

The latest sees Glacier Media announcing its acquisition of the Victoria Times Colonist, plus two more dailies and 20 weekly and bi-weekly community papers in British Columbia, from Postmedia Network.

The $86.5m (£54.3m) deal gives the Vancouver-based publisher the broadest local newspaper coverage in western Canada.

Newspapers have been hurt by the slumping economy in recent years - along with the movement towards the internet - but publishers such as Glacier and the Toronto-based Torstar Corp have managed to expand in print.

For Postmedia, the sale means that it can pay off some of its debt and concentrate its resources on its main daily titles, which include the Calgary Herald, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen and National Post.

It has been saddled with debt since buying out the bankrupt Canwest.

Torstar has also sealed two newspaper acquisition deals in the last week. It is buying a series of community papers from Performance Printing.

And it is paying $51.5m (£32.3m) to take nearly full control of the Canadian chain of Metro free daily newspapers.
