'Big cut in Universal Credit' due in two weeks, according to Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis

People who receive Universal Credit have been warned to prepare for a cut to the benefit due in two weeks.

Financial journalist and money expert Martin Lewis warned that hundreds of thousands could see the money they receive as part of the benefit drop.

A scheme put in place by the UK government to help people during the coronavirus crisis is set to expire, and the financial assistance put in place will dry up as a result.

Martin Tweeted : "On 13 November, there's a huge sinkhole awaiting many self-employed as Rishi Sunak's Covid suspension of the Universal Credit minimum income floor ends.

"Ie self employed will be assumed to have earnings for universal credit calculation even if they don't.

"I'd suggest self-employed contact their MP asap"

The minimum income floor was designed to stop taxpayers propping up self-employed people that make a loss, the Daily Mirror reported.

It treats self-employed people as if they earn at least a set amount each month, and if they earn less than this amount it is topped up.

But after the change, the minimum income floor will not be in place and if a person earns less than the amount they will not have their benefit topped up.

The change does not apply to self-employed people in the first 12 months of their claim.

The Institute of Fiscal Studies worked out that as many as 450,000 low-income households could see their income cut as a result of the policy reversal.

The Government has said they're "looking at" the exemption, but have not indicated that it will stay in place.

DWP officials said not every self-employed claimant will be hit by the minimum income floor.

Universal credit director Neil Couling said it only hits those who are defined as "gainfully self-employed" - meaning those who have zero earnings are "likely" to be spared.

He tweeted: "Position on MIF always more nuanced than headlines suggest."
