Big crowds of 5,000 could be back at gigs in Ireland from next month

Crowds of up to 5,000 people could be back at gigs from as early as next month.

Minister for the Arts, Catherine Martin, has revealed more details of the planned return of cultural events and concerts in June.

There will be comedy gigs, classical music recitals, outdoor concerts and theatre.

There will be a wide variety of test events, with capacity ranging depending on the venue.

However, Ms Martin confirmed that some of them would be along the same lines as the Sefton Park music concert in Liverpool earlier this month - which had 5,000 music fans.

The Minister was speaking to reporters from the courtyard of Collins Barracks in Dublin where she was launching a new exhibition, InForm.

She said: “I’m not going to give you the number of events, but I can tell you they’ll be across all genres, from classical music to smaller venues, to outdoor, to indoor, to comedy, to theatre.

“So according to the size of the venues the numbers would be greater, similar to what we saw in Liverpool.”

Ms Martin added: “I’m compiling a list of a number of live events right across the country to cover a variety of music genres, from rock to classical, comedy to theatre, also indoor and outdoor.

“The numbers will vary according to the event or the venue.

“I won’t speculate on the numbers right now because that will depend on when its presented on Thursday to the Covid subcommittee and on health advice.

“But I’m determined.

“I think these live events are key to reopening for a sector that has been devastated and I want to see the doors reopen and I want to see the doors reopen for good, and for people to be earning a living again, and all of us enjoying what we love to enjoy.

“Similarly with sport, Minister (Jack) Chambers and I are working on events there right now.

“I would like to see some of these events in June, so it will be June and July, the sooner the better for me.”
