Big chunk of Aaron Rodgers’ contract becomes fully guaranteed Wednesday

Almost $20 million of Aaron Rodgers’ record-breaking contract extension will become fully guaranteed Wednesday.

As stipulated in his contract and noted by Dan Graziano of ESPN, Rodgers’ $19.5 million roster bonus in 2020 becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of 2019’s waiver period, which began Monday.

For all intents and purposes, the roster bonus in 2020 was virtually guaranteed money at the time of signing, given Rodgers’ ability and the massive cap hit required to get out of the contract before the third day of the waivers period in 2019.

Rodgers’ deal included $78.7 million fully guaranteed at signing, including a $57.5 million signing bonus and $21.2 million in roster bonuses in 2018 and 2019.

Next season, Rodgers’ cap hit will jump to $26.5 million. It will hit $32.6 million in 2020 and $33.5 million in 2021.

Last season, Rodgers threw for 4,442 yards, 25 touchdown passes and two interceptions over 16 games, but the Packers won only six games and were eliminated from postseason contention before Week 16. The disappointing season led to the dismissal of head coach Mike McCarthy. He was replaced by Matt LaFleur, whose new contract with the Packers runs congruent with Rodgers’ extension.

Other important contract dates to know this offseason relate to Nick Perry and Jimmy Graham, who both have significant roster bonuses due on March 15. Perry is due $4.8 million. Graham is due $5 million.
