Big changes ahead for English Rivera town set to get new hotel and cinema

Torquay is about the change quite dramatically, as the council has just approved a huge new cinema and hotel for the area.

The beautiful seaside town on the English Channel in Devon will soon be home to a 13-screen Merlin Cinemas complex which has been granted permission to convert an empty shop.

An £11million Premier Inn has also been given the go ahead, Devon Live reported.

The new 120-bed hotel will be built on a council owned car park overlooking Torquay harbour - it has been redesigned to fit in with the listed buildings surrounding it, gaining approval from Torbay Council on Monday night.

The six-floor hotel will be built on the western end of the multi-storey car park at The Terrace, behind the Hilton Hotel going up as part of the multi-million pound redevelopment of Torwood Street.

The new cinema will inhabit the fromer BHS store on Union Street in the town centre, with planners saying the move will help regenerate the area.

Conservative councillor Nick Bye, proposing approval, said: “Town centres have to a mixture of uses including leisure.”

Conservative Andrew Barrand said: “It will breathe new life into our night-time economy.”

The cinema will have 13 screens over three levels ranging from 23 to 120 seats and will be allowed to open from 8am to 3am.
