Big change coming for alcohol sale hours in supermarkets like SuperValu, Tesco and more

A number of changes are coming into effect for Irish supermarkets regarding the hours within which they can sell alcohol to customers.

In line with the nightlife rule changes coming into play in 2023, the likes of Supervalu, Tesco, Dunnes and more will be able to sell alcohol from 10.30am on Sundays under the changes to licence hours being discussed by Cabinet.

The laws currently in place mean that supermarkets cannot sell alcohol until 12.30pm on Sundays.

However, this will now be changed to fall in line with the rules for Monday to Friday with alcohol sales being permitted from 10.30am to 10pm from Monday to Sunday in the New Year, the Irish Independent reports.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee will bring the proposal for new legislation to Cabinet which will introduce these changes to licencing laws.

Pubs will also be able to serve drinks until 12.30am every night of the week and nightclubs will be able to stay open until 6:00 am, with the last orders to be taken at 5am.

Under existing legislation, pubs have to stop serving at 11.30pm from Monday to Thursday, with this extending to 12.30am on Friday and Saturday, while final orders are at 11pm on Sunday.

Rules not changing

There are some rules within the legislation that will not be updated including Christmas Day laws - with all pubs and nightclubs are still required to close.

Publicans will still be able to serve customers on Good Friday in line with the recent end to the rule on pub closures.
