Big Bugs are flying into the Trafford Centre for free summer explorer trail

Giant bugs will be taking over the Trafford Centre as part of a summer explorer trail.

There'll be 12 of them making up the Big Bug Tour, which will let families get up close and personal and even take a ride on the resident ladybird.

The intricately-designed and extremely lifelike bugs will be placed around the centre this July for little explorers to find.

Visitors will be able to collect a trail map from the customer service desk and receive a certificate for completing the trail, while staff will also be on hand to make balloon bugs.

Waterstones will be doing book readings for children throughout the month as well, including one by Rachael Hardcastle, author of the new book Bluetooth and the World Wide Web.

The bugs include a honeybee, a caterpillar, a damselfly, a beetle, a grasshopper and more.

A spokesman for the centre said: "From honeybees to ladybirds, you’ll have the chance to examine the features of these magnificent creatures without the need for a magnifying glass, they are wonderfully realistic, so feel free to inspect them closely.

"You can even ride on the back of our ladybird. So, just like the insects themselves, this event is going to be unmissable."

The Big Bug Tour will be on at the centre from July 2 to 30.

Waterstones' book readings and activities will take place at 10am and 11am on July 3, 5, 11, 12, 17 and 19 and at 2pm on July 22.
