Big Brother’s Mia On Spotlighting Controversial Topics After Heated Pay Gap Chat

Whether you align with Mia Wijewardene‘s beliefs or not, you cannot deny that she made an impact on Big Brother Australia for her resilience during heated conversations. With the spunky housemate officially evicted, Mia has spoken up about the importance of using your platform to highlight significant issues in society.

For folks who’ve yet to feast their eyes on the Big Brother Australia reboot, Week Two’s round of eliminations came with a shock twist. To give you a quick recap, Allana Jackson and Jane Marshall-Doherty, alongside Mia, were up for eviction.

Jane was the first person to be evicted in this round of eliminations. However, in a scandalous twist, one lucky fan was handed the power to save either Allana or Mia from a second round of evictions.

Unfortunately, for the 23-year-old Bunnings worker, the fan who called into the Big Brother house decided to save Allana.

Although Mia’s time on the show was short-lived, the housemate made her mark on the show’s history for a variety of reasons. She was loud, she was authentically herself, and she never backed down from her beliefs.

In Week One, Mia was praised by viewers and reality TV stars — including Big Brother alum Tully Smyth — for the way she handled a heated discussion on the gender pay gap and gender roles with Michael Downs and Bruce Dunne, who both believed in traditional gender roles and that the pay gap didn’t exist.

Looking back on these heated conversations, Mia believed “it’s so important” to highlight these “big topics” because it allows viewers to reflect on what’s happening around them.

“I think it’s so important,” Mia told PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“I thought, like, we’re given this opportunity and this wide audience. Why wouldn’t you want to talk about these big topics that are really impacting people’s lives?

“I didn’t come in just to make small talk. I came here because I want to share my views. I want to have meaningful conversations.

“[I wanted to] really get Australia talking and thinking about the way we live and our society and how it functions and our place in it.”

Following her chat with Bruce and Michael — which has since gone gangbusters on Big Brother Australia‘s social media — Michael claimed Mia was “pushing buttons” with her conflicting views.

Reflecting on that comment, Mia admitted that she was taken “aback” by her ex-housemate’s response and these topics come naturally to her.

“Genuinely, trying to have these conversations with [housemates], I was kind of taken aback, I guess, because these are just things I would like to talk about with people in general, like, with my friends and my family,” Mia said.

“I engage with a lot of — I like to be very aware of social issues.

“I guess I was very taken aback by why people didn’t want to engage with these people, especially when they have opposing views, because I wanted to hear what those views were so that I could get their perspective.”

With Mia — as well as Jane, who has sparked debates over her political views — leaving the house, it wouldn’t surprise me if these types of conversations fade into the background.

And although these ‘hard’ topics would result in complete anarchy, they’re still incredibly important to have on Aussie airwaves because they bring awareness to what’s going on beyond the Big Brother house and how it impacts us all.

Hopefully, Mia’s impact — again, which has completely gone viral on social media — inspires others to speak on important matters.
