Big Brother maker Endemol Shine has acquired a majority stake in the animation firm behind the hit internet series Simon’s Cat.
The London-based firm, also called Simon’s Cat, was founded in 2008 by illustrator, animator and director Simon Tofield.
The digital comedy series, which follows the cheeky and amusing antics of a loveable feline and his long-suffering owner, has proved to be a YouTube hit.
The series is one of the most popular shows on Endemol Beyond’s YouTube multichannel network, with 3.5 million subscribers generating over 650m views.
The deal will see the expansion of the Simon’s Cat franchise, including looking at opportunities for a TV series, publishing, licensing and merchandise.
“Simon Tofield is a creative entrepreneur and has built his business into an international online success,” said Laurence Jones, commercial director at Endemol Shine UK. “Millions of fans around the world love the mischievous and funny Simon’s Cat and there is enormous potential for growth, whilst staying true to the brand.”
Endemol Beyond UK’s slate of original digital programming includes Icon, the lifestyle network started by YouTuber Michelle Phan, sports channels Rule’M Sports, featuring KSI, and Legends of Gaming which includes a live event at Alexandra Palace next month.
“Endemol Shine Group has a fantastic reputation and a world-class premium channel network in Endemol Beyond,” said Tofield. “We’re looking forward to the next step of our relationship with the company and collaborating with the creative and commercial teams.”
Simon’s Cat recently used crowdfunding to create a 13-minute animation called Off to the Vet, the project’s first foray into colour animation.
Endemol Shine UK and Simon’s Cat were advised on the deal by United Agents.
