Big Breakfast returns to Channel 4 almost 30 years on with comedian Mo Gilligan as host

After 18 years off air, and many, many calls for its return... the Big Breakfast is coming back.

Channel 4 announced the return of the anarchic show – which launched the careers of Chris Evans and Gaby Roslin, Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen – for a one-off special next year, almost 30 years since it first aired.

Comedian Mo Gilligan will host as part of C4’s “black takeover day”, with the format reimagined through an “unashamedly Black British lens”.

Mo, right, said: “I am grateful to be asked to host this special event, particularly as part of such a hugely thrilling and history-making day for British television.”

Celebrity Gogglebox, Countdown and Channel 4 News will also feature all-black talent as C4 marks the killing of George Floyd and Black History Month 2021.

The channel wants to “kick-start a fresh push for greater representation”.

Ian Katz, director of programmes, said: “Channel 4 was created to give voice to underrepresented parts of society and do things other broadcasters would not, and the Black Takeover qualifies on both counts.

“It will be much more than a day of eye-catching programming, providing a focal point for our efforts to drive up on and off screen representation and leaving a lasting legacy on the channel and beyond.”
