Big boost for Airdrie foodbank as 1300kg of food donated at Tesco collections

Generous customers and staff at the Tesco superstores in Monklands provided a huge boost to Airdrie foodbank through successful collection events.

They donated more than 1300 kilos of much-needed food items ranging from pasta and tinned foods to juices and biscuits to the good cause – as well as £725 cash for further supplies.

Foodbank volunteers were delighted with the level of support as they visited the two stores, in Airdrie town centre and at Faraday retail park in Coatbridge, to collect the hundreds of donations.

It formed part of Tesco’s regular three-day Neighbourhood Food Collection initiative, supporting foodbanks across the country.

Delighted Airdrie foodbank manager David Findlay told the Advertiser: “Many customers also donated cash towards a shop.

“Without the support of the community, we wouldn’t be able to help families in need of our help, especially at this time of year.”

Figures from the foodbank in May revealed that demand for its support had risen by nearly one third last year, as volunteers distributed 4713 three-day emergency parcels in the 12 months to the end of March 2019.
