Big Bash fans set for another lengthy season as fixtures released

This season's Big Bash League will last for more than two months as Cricket Australia persists with an extended, 61-game season.

The 10th season of the Big Bash League will start earlier than usual, with the first game, between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades at Adelaide Oval, starting on December 3.

The season opener will take place after stumps of the first day of the Gabba Test match against India, which starts on the same day.

The season will extend through to February 6, with a five-game finals series following a full home and away season.

Cricket Australia (CA) cautioned the coronavirus pandemic could see the schedule changed at any time.

"Scheduling in the time of coronavirus is not without its challenges," Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson said.

"There are factors outside the league itself which could impact the fixture at a later date.

"That said, at this time we are happy with the fixture as it stands and excited to celebrate a decade of Big Bash with Australian fans during the summer."

There had been criticism from some quarters about the length of the Big Bash season in recent years, although CA is committed to continue with a full home and away season.

Tickets will be made available closer to the season start.

CA also said it would reveal "enhancements" to the league at a later stage.

WBBL set for another standalone 59-game season

The Women's Big Bash (WBBL) will retain its standalone status, with a 59-game season scheduled to begin on October 17.

The season will visit each state in its early stages, before being predominantly based in Sydney.

The final will be played on November 29 at a yet-to-be-decided location.

"The first standalone season of the WBBL was an incredible success and we're confident this season will continue that trend," Dobson said.

"We're thrilled to be able to deliver more television games than ever before and welcome back the stars from Australia's record-breaking, T20 World Cup-winning team after their historic victory at the MCG in March.

"The League is pleased to have delivered a fixture that includes matches in each club's home market while also reducing the overall travel burden on clubs.

"By focusing parts of the competition in a central location [Sydney], it also provides optionality should the COVID-19 situation affect the flow of the season, and we remain vigilant in all aspects of our planning to provide a safe environment for players and staff."
