Big band spreads festive cheer to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

An award-winning big band brought some festive cheer to patients and visitors at Glasgow’s super hospital for the third Christmas in a row.

The Michael Brawley Big Band performed at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) last night (Tuesday, December 10).

The concert is part of a two-year animating public spaces through music and exhibitions programme in Glasgow and Clyde hospitals.

Jackie Sands, Health Improvement Senior: Arts and Health, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "The performance forms part of the Your Hospital Live Arts! festive line up; bringing the culture of the city to the QEUH.

“Music as we know is powerful - triggering positive emotions and bringing people together.  I'm sure a memorable night will be had by all patients, carers, friends, family and NHS staff alike.”

Members performed a mix of Christmas classics and funk and soul in the QEUH's public Atrium and were joined by the band's creator, Michael Brawley, for a rare performance.

Michael set the group up in 1995 but left to go abroad and pursue other interests, so there was delight all round when he returned for one-night only on the tenor sax.

The big band, which performs solely to raise money for well-meaning and worthy causes, has donated more than £50,000 to charity over the years.

It was set up by Michael to allow school leavers to continue to play their chosen instrument, but has been run for many years by a committee of band members.

Other performers at QEUH this season include Paisley Opera (December 17).
