Big Arsenal and Manchester United prediction made ahead of Europa League semi-final second legs

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes Arsenal would lose a Europa League final with Manchester United.

The Gunners are far from through to the final at this stage, trailing at the halfway stage of their Europa League semi-final with former boss Unai Emery and Villarreal.

Mikel Arteta's men put in a largely poor display in Castellon, but did leave with a lifeline with Nicolas Pepe scoring an away goal from the spot in an improved second half.

Arsenal can now progress with a 1-0 win, but they have not kept a clean sheet at home since January, and Villarreal have scored in each of their last ten away games, winning all of their away fixtures in the Europa League so far this season.

Despite that, Sherwood is backing Arsenal to progress with a second leg win, but he is not as hopeful for their hopes in the final where they would be likely meet Manchester United after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men defeat Roma 6-2 in their first leg.

“I would put my money on them going through against Villarreal, I think they’re capable of doing that, I think they can score at the Emirates," Sherwood told Premier League Productions.

“Can they beat Man United in the final? Not on the evidence of what we’ve seen this season.”

Arsenal made a slow start to their clash against Villarreal, going two behind within the first 30 minutes.

A similarly slow start would likely see the Gunners all-but out. If Villarreal were to score two away goals on Thursday night, Arsenal would have to score a minimum of three goals.

But before attention turns back to the Europa League, the Gunners will take on Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday, travelling straight from the Valencian region before heading back to London.
