Biffy Clyro to headline Edinburgh's Hogmanay concert

Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro will be headlining this year's Edinburgh Hogmanay concert.

The announcement was made at midnight and tickets for Concert in the Gardens go on sale at 9am on Friday. They can be bought at Tickets Scotland on Rose Street, Ripping Records on South Bridge or online.
The band, currently touring America, is from Kilmarnock and formed in 1995. Their latest album, Only Revolutions, has sold more than 300,000 copies in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury music prize.

They performed inside the House of Commons earlier this year in an event celebrating the Digital Economy Act.

The City of Edinburgh Council is providing £1.04m for the events this year, compared to last year's £1.38m. The Scottish Government provides £400,000 to support the event, which is estimated to have generated £29m for Scotland's economy last year.

Councillor Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh's festival and events spokesman, said:

"Edinburgh's Hogmanay is envied across the world and this year, with Biffy Clyro set to perform, there will be no better place to be to bring in the new year."

Tickets are already on sale for the new year street party. Previous Scottish acts at the Hogmanay bash have included The Proclaimers, Calvin Harris, Glasvegas and KT Tunstall.

The city's Hogmanay event has become too commercialised according to Queen Margaret University's events expert Dr Joe Goldblatt.

He told The Scotsman today:

"What we have seen is the growing commercialisation of the event, which has now become about trying to attract the big names in pop and rock music. To an extent, it has moved away from what it was originally meant to be."

With the rest of the line up still to be announced, we're keen to know who you would like to see joining Biffy on the stage in Princes Street Gardens.
