Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil joined members of Frightened Rabbit on stage to perform the band’s song “The Modern Leper” and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”.
The performance was part of their “The Songs of Frightened Rabbit” concert, a tribute night celebrating the life of Scott Hutchison, the Frightened Rabbit singer who took his own life last May.
Members of Frightened Rabbit — Scott’s brother and drummer Grant, with Billy Kennedy and Andy Monaghan — performed eight songs at Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow, with an array of special guests.
Along with Neil, guests included The Twilight Sad’s James Graham and Andy McFarlane, indie rock singer Kathryn Joseph, and singer/songwriter Fiskur.
Frightened Rabbit posted on Instagram after the event, writing: “We felt Scott’s presence in every word that was sung with us last night by the incredible folks who joined us on stage and in the whole bandstand.”
Ahead of the event, Grant Hutchison told the BBC: “It seemed like the right thing to do, and like a natural thing to do – to make a positive thing out of something that was a very tragic event – to be able to help two charities and two causes, and also to play with people that are good friends. I think I’ll be more nervous than I’ve ever been for a Frightened Rabbit gig before, it’ll be strange.”
Money raised on the night went towards homeless charity Social Bite, as well as the Scott Hutchison foundation.
Frightened Rabbit formed in 2003 and released five albums between 2006 and 2016. Scott had previously hinted that the band had five or six songs ready for a forthcoming sixth album.
The Hutchison brothers had also performed under the name Masterstystem, alongside Justin Lockey, lead guitarist of Editors and his brother, James Lockey.
Grant added: “All of us are dealing with Scott’s death on a personal level. It’s been seven months, that’s a very short time. We do have something planned for next year which was meant to happen this year which we’ll hopefully announce at the start of the year.”
