Bidston has most cases in Wirral as borough's rate falls

One Birkenhead ward has the most Covid-19 cases in Wirral, but progress in the battle against the virus continues.

In the week up to February 5, Bidston and St James recorded 50 cases at a rate of 309 per 100,000, the highest figures in the borough on both counts.

Other areas among the most infected in the borough were New Brighton (41 cases), Liscard (40), Wallasey (39) and Seacombe (39).

In each of the four wards the infection rate was between 252 per 100,000 and 271 per 100,000.

Across Wirral, 17 of 22 council wards registered a fall in cases compared to last week, with three showing no change.

Bromborough and Wallasey recorded a rise in cases, from 34 to 38 in the former and 33 to 39 in the latter.

There was more good news in the weekly update.

The positivity rate, that is the percentage of tests which come back as positive, fell again.

On January 8, Wirral's positivity rate peaked at an enormous 20.3%.

As case numbers fell markedly, this measure only decreased to 18.5% in the following week and 16.4% in the week up to January 22.

But in the week up to January 29 the rate fell considerably to 10.7%. This week it was down again to 8.3%.

However, there is still a long way to go.

In the first weekly update of December, just after the second lockdown was lifted, the positivity rate was less than a third of what it is now at 2.3%.

As well as this, there are still huge numbers of people in the borough’s hospitals.

Figures for cases across Wirral as a whole, which cover the week up to February 7, confirm that infections are still falling in the borough.

Wirral registered an infection rate of 196 per 100,000 with 636 cases recorded a noticeable fall on last week’s rate of 283 per 100,000 with 917 cases registered.

The current figures are the lowest in the Liverpool City Region, below St Helens’ rate of 347 per 100,000, Knowsley’s rate of 345, Sefton’s rate of 281, Halton’s rate of 279 and Liverpool’s rate of 268.
