NEW YORK _ Joe Biden will attend a scaled-down 9/11 commemoration ceremony in downtown Manhattan on Friday, drawing a contrast with President Donald Trump, who is staying away from New York for the somber anniversary.
Biden will take part in the ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum with his wife, Jill Biden, his campaign announced late Thursday.
That will put the Democratic presidential candidate in close proximity to Vice President Mike Pence, who is also expected to attend the ground zero ceremony. Pence is set to attend a second ceremony hosted by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation as well.
In the afternoon, Biden and his wife will travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for a ceremony honoring the victims of Flight 93.
Trump will also be at the Shanksville ceremony, though it's unclear if he will cross paths with Biden.
The Queens-born president, who is widely disliked in his native New York, has not explained why he opted against traveling to the city for this year's 19th anniversary commemoration of the 9/11 terror attacks.
