In a plot twist no one saw coming, Donald Trump, the self-proclaimed border enforcer-in-chief, just defended Joe Biden’s immigration record. Yes, you read that correctly. In a rambling, all-caps-adjacent post on Truth Social, Trump insisted that President Joe Biden was never in favor of open borders.
According to Trump, the real culprits behind the current immigration crisis are the shadowy figures pulling Biden’s strings, who also apparently hijacked the presidential signature machine. Seriously.
It wasn’t Biden’s idea to “Open the Border”
In his post, Trump wrote in part, “Joe Biden was not for Open Borders, he never talked about Open Borders,” with a surprising tone of empathy. “It wasn’t his idea to Open the Border, and almost destroy our Country… It was the people that knew he was cognitively impaired, and that took over the Autopen.”
Right. So in Trump’s version of reality, Biden is essentially a confused grandpa, not responsible for anything that’s happened during his presidency. Instead, Trump blames faceless “treasonous thugs” who stole the presidency, programmed an Autopen (yes, the Autopen), and let criminals of all “kinds, shapes, and sizes” waltz across the border.
This might be the first time Trump has ever acknowledged that Biden is not, in fact, the mastermind behind every national disaster. In this fever dream of a post, Trump portrays Biden as a hapless figure—someone who “would never allow drug dealers, gang members, and the mentally insane” into the country, at least not if he were still “the Joe Biden that everybody knew.”
Has Trump softened on Biden?
You might be wondering: has Trump softened on Biden, especially after Biden’s cancer diagnosis? Has the man who built his political brand on calling immigrants “rapists” suddenly found a redeemable quality in his opponent? Of course not.
The real goal here is to push a new narrative: Biden isn’t evil. He’s just a puppet. And the real enemy is a cabal of bureaucrats who, according to Trump, committed “TREASON at the Highest Level!” Because what better way to explain policy disagreements than accusing your opponents of treason?
Trump blocked Biden’s border bill

More likely, Trump could be feeling pangs of guilt for encouraging Congressional Republicans to block Biden’s bipartisan border bill, which included provisions for more border agents, faster asylum processing, and stricter enforcement, that was the result of months of negotiations between both parties. But according to The Washington Post, Trump wasn’t having it.
Why? Because an actual legislative solution to immigration might hurt his campaign narrative. After all, how can you run on “Make America Great Again” if America starts to function again?
So, in true political theater fashion, Trump rallied his Republican allies to block the bill then turned around and blamed Biden for the border chaos. But now, in this Truth Social post, he’s changed the tune. Biden didn’t create open borders—he was just a helpless figurehead while the real villains unleashed mayhem.
