President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump took decisive steps toward securing their parties' presidential nominations with resounding victories in the Super Tuesday primaries held across 16 U.S. states and territories.

With this, Biden and Trump move closer to a rematch of the 2020 election. According to the Associated Press (AP), Joe Biden won the Democratic primary in 12 states, while Trump secured victories in 10. The result for California, where victory was expected for the two main contenders, is still pending at the time of publication.

According to RealClearPolitics projections, Trump was assured of winning North Carolina, Maine, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Virginia, Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Minnesota. However, Utah, Alaska, and California were still to be counted.

Meanwhile, President Biden claimed wins in Iowa, Virginia, Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Colorado, Utah, Vermont, North Carolina, Maine, Texas, Arkansas and Minnesota.

Vermont was still undecided for the GOP, with Nikki Haley, the former US representative to the UN, leading Trump by 2 percentage points with 86% of the counts. Meanwhile, Biden lost the caucus in American Samoa to Jason Palmer.

In terms of delegates, NPR reports that as of now (with California pending), Trump has 393 of the 1,215 required to win the GOP nomination, while Haley has 47.

More than one-third of the total Republican delegates were contested on Super Tuesday. With the results of this election day, it seems almost certain that Trump will secure his third consecutive presidential candidacy with the Republican ticket.
