Biden to hand power to Vice President Kamala Harris during colonoscopy in annual physical exam

President Biden on Friday was set to temporarily handed over power to Vice President Kamala Harris while he undergoes a routine colonoscopy as part of his annual physical exam.

Biden arrived early Friday at Walter Reed Medical Center in suburban Bethesda, Md., for his first routine physical exam as president.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden would be placed under anesthesia during the procedure and would transfer power to Harris, in accordance with presidential protocol.

“Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia,” she said. “The vice president will work from her office in the West Wing during this time.”

The president is expected to return to the White House to resume his duties later in the afternoon. He is expected to preside over the annual mock pardoning of a Thanksgiving turkey ahead of next week’s holiday.
