Biden taps U of C economist Brent Neiman for top spot at Treasury Department

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden tapped University of Chicago economist Brent Neiman Friday for a top spot at the Treasury Department.

The official title for the post Biden is nominating Neiman for is Deputy Under Secretary / Designated Assistant Secretary for International Finance and Development at the Treasury Department.

Neiman is the Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

Neiman’s recent pursuits include research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, with a focus on inequality as more people have been working from home. According to his biography on the Chicago Booth website, he “conducts research on international macroeconomics, finance, and trade.”

He received undergraduate degrees in economics and applied science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999, earning a masters in mathematical modeling from Oxford University in 2000. After picking up a doctorate in economics from Harvard University in 2008, Neiman joined the Chicago Booth faculty.
