The Biden administration has announced a series of measures aimed at addressing a significant Russian government-backed campaign to interfere in the upcoming 2024 US presidential election. These actions include the unveiling of criminal charges against two Russian individuals, sanctions imposed on ten entities and individuals, and the seizure of 32 internet domains.
According to US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, at the direction of Russian President Vladimir Putin, three Russian companies utilized fake profiles on social media platforms to promote false narratives. Additionally, two employees of a Russian state media network have been indicted in a US court for their alleged involvement in a scheme that funneled nearly $10 million to establish and manage a Tennessee-based front company responsible for creating online content designed to sow discord among Americans.
These actions mark the Biden administration's most significant public response to date regarding alleged Russian efforts to influence American voters. Following recent accusations against Iran for attempting to hack both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns, the administration's actions serve as a clear indication of the ongoing threat posed by Russian interference in the upcoming election.
Sources have revealed that the Russian disinformation campaign involves the use of both American and non-American individuals to disseminate false information. Attorney General Merrick Garland recently convened a meeting of the Justice Department's Election Threats Task Force, which was attended by senior law enforcement officials, including FBI Director Christopher Wray.
